Peru: Andean Agri-food Systems Senior Scientist

The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking a highly motivated and visionary senior scientist to develop and lead the development of an Andean Agri-Food Systems Initiative.

About the role

This position will be based in Lima, Peru and will report to the regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and strategic scientific guidance to develop and implement the Andean Initiative through engagement with key stakeholders.
  • Define the R4D content for the Initiative within an agri-food systems framework, considering key intervention areas, including biodiversity conservation and use, increasing climate resilience of agro-food systems, value chains development and market linkages, and use of innovative tools to approach data (big data) management and analysis, and other wider-system options.
  • Develop a theory of change for the Andean Initiative with key public and private stakeholder engagement.
  • Contribute to a resource mobilization strategy, and specific concept notes in collaboration with CIP RM team, the regional Director and CIP science teams and partners.
  • Manage the portfolio of projects and staff under the Initiative.
  • Develop a compelling communications strategy for positioning the Andean Initiative with the Communication Unit.
  • Link and articulate with relevant global initiatives (particularly climate change work), with CIP’s climate smart R4D work in other regions and with the CGIAR Research Program on Roots, Tubers and Bananas.

What we are looking for?

  • PhD in relevant agriculture-related disciplines such us Agronomy, Agricultural economics, agri-business or related to agri-food systems.
  • At least 8 years’ experience in a scientific or development oriented (international) organization. Experience in Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) will be essential.
  • Scientific experience in at least two of the key intervention areas included in the Andean Initiative.
  • Demonstrated people management and team building skills.
  • Proven ability to inspire and empower colleagues as much as stakeholders.
  • Proactive approach, with ability to find creative ways to solve problems and proven ability to create, advance and implement concepts and innovations leveraging on excellent team work skills.
  • Superb written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish are essential.
