The Development Manager/Director oversees the planning, coordination and administration of all aspects of fundraising and grants. The Development Manager/Director will work in tandem with the Operations Director to advance the organization's strategic direction. This position reports to the Mayan Families co-founders.

The position title of Manager or Director will be awarded depending upon the incumbent's experience and strength of application.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The position performs a wide range of duties including:

Funding Strategies

  • Oversee all grant applications and grant reporting for five departments: medical, food security and community development, shelter, income generation and micro-loans, and education

  • Determine grant priorities, delegate proposal activities, contribute to editing and authoring, and track applications through completion

  • Set and implement long-term goals and objectives to achieve the successful advancement of fundraising capacities

  • Supervise all fundraising activities including annual giving, capital campaign, special projects, and direct appeals

  • Support the Donor Team in creating annual fundraising plans and SMART strategies for campaigns

  • Oversee organization-wide fundraising priorities to support the strategic direction of the organization

Team Management

  • Recruit, interview and select well-qualified fundraising staff

  • Supervise program staff by providing direction, input and feedback

  • Liaise with department managers to ensure effective and efficient program delivery

  • Directly manage the Donor Relations Manager, the Communications Manager, and the 7-person Donor Team

Relationship Management

  • Coordinate, author and pitch funding proposals to partner organizations and VIP donors

  • Oversee welcome and acknowledgement strategies for all departments

  • Manage VIP donor accounts and major gift prospect list

  • Develop reports and additional content for VIP donors

  • Maintain current major partnerships and support development manager in establishing new ones

  • Implement corporate giving strategy together with Donor Relations Manager

Administration

  • Create and maintain office systems to support all development projects and operations

  • Set and supervise policy for donor and gift record-keeping

  • Support the organization in strengthening processes which relate to grant applications and reporting

Requirements

  • 2 years experience in grant writing and/or relationship management

  • Masters Degree or equivalent professional experience in development

  • Extensive knowledge of challenges faced by indigenous people, preferably with regionally specific knowledge

  • Experience managing a team

  • Experience developing a fundraising budget

  • Demonstrable success in leading funding campaigns

  • Excellent writing and editing skills

  • Creative, resilient and flexible

  • Native fluency in English and intermediate Spanish

The successful applicant must be prepared to relocate to Panajachel, Guatemala for a period of 18 months.
